Create a timeline of anomaly onset
Place chemical batches, usage changes, makeup-water sources, process leaks, cleaning and recirculation-equipment adjustments on one timeline. Foaming and compatibility of surface-active biocides require assessment under actual conditions; LANXESS energy literature also considers process impacts when selecting a route. This background does not mean every BAC formulation necessarily foams heavily, nor does foam quantity establish biocidal strength or product conformity.
Distinguish product effects from external contamination
Check whether foam existed before the change and whether it concentrates around a particular return flow or production period, preserving representative sample information. Continued ingress of other cleaners or organic matter may prevent a biocide-formulation change alone from resolving the cause. Follow existing inspection procedures; do not identify unknown water by smelling or touching it. Without evidence, record the source as under investigation rather than alleging that the supplier substituted raw materials.
Compare performance under actual operating conditions
Use actual recirculating water and suitable controls in controlled trials, recording agitation, temperature, foam formation and collapse, and operating impacts. A static clean-water trial covers limited conditions and cannot replace a cooling tower or aerated circuit. If old and new products express concentration differently, establish a common comparison basis first. Equal product volumes must not conceal different active amounts or formulations and distort results.
Separate operational effects from microbiological performance
Persistent foam may remain a process problem even if microbial results meet the objective; conversely, a calm appearance does not prove effective control. Procurement reviews should retain both types of results and confirm product uses and site-management requirements. Results obtained after adding other chemicals belong to a combined program requiring renewed explanation of conditions; they cannot all be attributed to BAC alone.
Develop specific requirements for the next purchase
Describe foam location, duration, actual water and other additives to suppliers rather than merely requesting a low-foam substitute. Ask candidates to explain validation methods and retain investigated contamination sources and equipment conditions. Solutions may involve formulation compatibility, source control or other reviewed measures, but insufficient evidence cannot support a promise that a higher-content or differently colored product will eliminate foam.
Where foam is especially pronounced near a return-water inlet, recording its location helps narrow the investigation, but proximity to a pipe alone cannot establish the contamination source. Providing site personnel with location, timing and sample information for review supports assessment more effectively than uploading only a foam photograph with an inquiry.

Does more foam mean better microbial control?
Foam cannot establish microbiological performance.
If conditions normalize after adding a defoamer, has the original formulation passed?
Record and verify this as a new combination of conditions.
