Biofilms and Biodispersants: Disinfection, Dispersion and Removal

Distinguish microorganisms in the water, surface attachment and detached deposits to understand the role of biodispersants in a control program.

Technical article scene reference
Even after microbial results in system water improve, heat-exchanger differential pressure or surface slime may show little change. One reason is that waterborne microorganisms and surface-attached biofilms require different observations and treatment approaches. Evaluate biodispersants within the complete cleaning and biocide program.

Establish whether the deposit is biofilm or something else

Biofilm consists of a surface-attached microbial community and its associated structure. Industrial deposits may also contain inorganic particles, corrosion products and other contaminants. Solenis explains that biofilm can affect flow and equipment performance while continually releasing microorganisms from difficult-to-treat locations into the water.

Diagnosis should combine water samples, surface inspection, deposit information and changes in differential pressure or heat transfer. Identifying every deposit solely by color or a slippery feel can overlook concurrent scale, oil and other problems.

Disinfection and dispersion perform different tasks

Biocides focus on microbial control, while biodispersants often improve wetting, penetration or soil dispersion to help address attached layers. Guardian Chemicals product literature distinguishes cleaning, wetting and supporting functions. Dispersion performance therefore requires actual formulation and evidence rather than a category name alone.

Do not assume that a product with only a dispersing function can independently provide disinfection. Even if a formulated product claims both functions, review the intended uses, test methods and results separately. Evidence for one function does not establish the other.

Detachment does not mean removal from the system

Once attached material enters the water flow, filtration, blowdown or other removal steps still require consideration. Before a trial, identify where detached material may travel and which filters, heat exchangers or narrow passages need attention. Surface changes alone must not distract from the downstream load.

Record relevant equipment conditions before the trial and agree on inspections and responses to abnormal results. Whether a heavily fouled system needs offline cleaning or staged treatment depends on project conditions and equipment-maintenance procedures.

Check compatibility across the complete treatment program

Compatibility between a dispersant, biocide, corrosion or scale inhibitor and other additives requires evidence for the specific formulations. Also review foam, materials, drainage and downstream biological treatment. A manufacturer’s compatibility statement for its own formulation does not automatically cover every product in the same category.

Ask suppliers to explain the product’s function, applicable water circuits, existing trials and monitoring methods, and to propose validation using site water. A product combination should address a confirmed problem; more chemicals do not necessarily make a more complete program.

Evaluate water, surfaces and equipment together

A practical evaluation can track waterborne microbial trends, deposits on inspectable surfaces, and differential pressure, flow or heat-transfer performance. Consistent methods and sampling locations are necessary for before-and-after comparison. A single water sample cannot demonstrate that biofilm has been removed.

CDC cooling-tower guidance treats sediment and biofilm, temperature, water age and disinfectant residual as connected management factors. Retain measures to reduce stagnation, maintain cleanliness and monitor continuously alongside the chemical program so that improvements can be sustained.

Can a biodispersant replace a biocide?

Do not assume so. Verify dispersion and biocidal functions separately and establish supporting procedures for the specific product’s intended use.

Does increased turbidity after treatment prove success?

Not by itself. Assess removal of detached material, water quality, surfaces and equipment performance to determine whether the change is expected or an abnormal load.
