Sodium chlorite and sodium chlorate differ by one Chinese character: how can purchasing documents prevent errors?

  1. Read equipment raw-material requirements
  2. Five identity cross-checks
  3. Check solid/liquid form and concentration
  4. Verify batches on warehouse receipt

These similarly named precursors are not interchangeable. Check Chinese and English names, formula, CAS and equipment-specified requirements together to prevent abbreviations from misidentifying materials during quotation and receipt.

Start with the generator's raw-material list

First find the exact raw-material name and specification version in equipment documents, then request quotations. Do not infer equipment suitability from a supplier's available stock. EPA supply-chain information describes the distinct roles of Sodium chlorite and Sodium chlorate, showing that similar names do not mean identical purchasing items.

Establish five identity checks

Display Chinese and English names, formula, CAS number and supplied form together, comparing quotations, labels and reports item by item. Sodium chlorite is NaClO₂; sodium chlorate is NaClO₃. The different oxygen-atom count is not a spelling detail. Orders should not state only 'chlorine dioxide raw material,' because generator processes have different requirements.

Check solid/liquid form and concentration basis

Even with the correct name, solids and solutions require separate verification, with consistent mass-based content expressions and equipment-approved specifications. A commercial solution concentration and solid purity cannot be compared directly as the same parameter. Packaging photographs aid identification but do not establish actual composition.

Extend verification through warehouse receipt

Link label photographs, batch numbers, COAs and the order in receiving records, and suspend connection to equipment if discrepancies arise. Relabeling or verbal explanations must not bypass identity checks. Keep retained batches separate so mixing does not destroy source traceability.

A ready-to-use checklist

For each batch, record six fields: raw-material name in equipment documents, full order name, actual packaging name, batch-report name, form and content basis, and reviewer. Explain every mismatch and its disposition. Different commercial abbreviations still need matching chemical identities; different formulas or generator processes cannot be released as alternate names for the same material.

Use the same identity across all four documents

Create a four-column comparison of the quotation, order, label and report, checking Chinese and English names, chemical formula, CAS number, physical form and concentration basis item by item. Complete any column containing only an abbreviation before circulating it. Do not treat a computer filename as evidence of the document's contents. In particular, when a supplier sends several files for similar raw materials at once, open and check the actual text.

Receiving staff should have the confirmed full name, permitted specifications and corresponding generator information. Segregate and verify mismatches, retaining original labels and photographs instead of relabeling to resolve identity. Feed discrepancies back into supplier records and purchasing templates to prevent the same naming error next time.

Explore further

Are products interchangeable if both can generate chlorine dioxide?

No. It must match the generator's actual process technology.

Is a matching CAS number sufficient?

Also check form, content, impurities and equipment specifications.
