Water with stringent requirements / Application solutions

Membranes, Filtration & Ion Exchange

Identify membrane and resin models first, then distinguish pretreatment, treatment within the membrane system, online operation and shutdown treatment.

Environment and objectives

First confirm what is being treated and at which treatment stage.

RO/NF, UF/MF, filter media, activated carbon, softening resins and shutdown preservation.

Operating conditions to check first

Polyamide membranes have different oxidant tolerance from UF/MF membranes. Biodispersion, cleaning, disinfection and preservation are separate tasks.

Compare candidate treatment approaches

Why each approach is recommended and under which conditions it applies.

01
Non-oxidizing biocides

DBNPA-based products formulated for membrane systems

Reason for recommendation
Candidates for initial microbial-control screening in some RO/NF systems.
Conditions of use
Check membrane-manufacturer instructions, complete formulation, reducing-agent effects and permeate handling. Suitability is not universal across membranes.
Documents to verify
Approval for the membrane model; formulation TDS; permeate/residue requirements; actual water quality and compatibility validation
Discuss this approach
02
Application-specific formulation

Equipment-approved hydrogen peroxide / peracetic acid

Reason for recommendation
A possible controlled sanitation approach for certain membrane systems.
Conditions of use
Subject to temperature, materials, metal impurities and exposure limits. Follow the membrane manufacturer's procedure.
Documents to verify
Membrane/equipment instructions; impurities and active ingredients; disinfection and rinsing validation
Discuss this approach
03
Treatment-stage option

Pretreatment chlorination, chlorine dioxide or electrochlorination

Reason for recommendation
Control microbial load in the water circuit upstream of membranes.
Conditions of use
Remove and verify residuals before oxidant-sensitive downstream membranes. Do not assume dosing within the membrane system is permitted.
Documents to verify
Pretreatment and removal process; online residual monitoring; membrane-manufacturer limits
Discuss this approach
04
Supporting products

Disinfection and preservation products for specific filter media / resins

Reason for recommendation
Maintain the system according to filter medium, resin and shutdown conditions.
Conditions of use
Preservation chemicals such as bisulfites should not be described as universal disinfectants. Follow the media manufacturer's procedure.
Documents to verify
Filter-media/resin grade; accepted disinfection/preservation method; cleaning, return-to-service and residual testing
Discuss this approach

This comparison supports initial purchasing screening. It does not replace the specific formulated product label, equipment instructions or site validation, and provides no universal dosage or on-site mixing instructions.
